EN47 - Grade Introduction
EN47 is a high-carbon alloy spring steel supplied in the rolled condition. It is suitable for oil hardening and tempering processes. In the hardened and tempered state, EN47 combines excellent spring characteristics with good wear and abrasion resistance.
When hardened, EN47 offers high toughness and superior shock resistance, making it ideal for applications subject to dynamic stresses, impacts, and vibrations.
Key Features
- High resilience and fatigue strength
- Excellent toughness and shock resistance
- Good wear and abrasion resistance
- Suitable for oil hardening and tempering

Heat Treatment & Processes
Annealing
- Heat to: 820 – 840 °C
- Process: Hold until uniform temperature is reached
- Cooling: Furnace cool slowly to ~600 °C, then air cool
- Result: ~250 HB hardness, good machinability
Hardening
Preheat slowly to: 650 – 700 °C
Heat to: 820 – 850 °C
Process: Hold until uniform temperature is reached
Quenching: Oil
Tempering
Reheat to: 400 – 600 °C (depending on required hardness/toughness balance)
Process: Hold for at least 1 hour per 25 mm thickness
Cooling: Air cool
Final Hardness: 48 – 52 HRC
Application
Automotive & Heavy Vehicles: Leaf springs, coil springs, helical springs, Agricultural Equipment: Tractor springs and suspension parts, Industrial Applications: Load-bearing springs, plate springs, and general engineering components requiring strength under stress and vibration
Conclusion
EN47 is a medium-carbon, chromium alloy spring steel with excellent toughness, shock resistance, and fatigue strength. It is best suited for springs in heavy-duty automotive and industrial applications, especially where high stress and vibration resistance are required.
