Grade Brief

Kuber Multimetals LLP – Trusted manufacturer, stockist & exporter of SAE 8620  with assured quality testing (Impact, Mechanical, Chemical, Bend Tests) and global delivery.

SAE 8620 is a low-alloy nickel–chromium–molybdenum case hardening steel. It is generally supplied in the as-rolled condition with a maximum hardness of HB 255. The steel offers high external strength with good internal/core toughness, resulting in excellent wear resistance.

Compared with related grades such as 8615 and 8617, AISI 8620 provides higher core strength. It also shows good flexibility during hardening treatments, which allows optimization of case/core properties.

Pre-hardened and tempered (uncarburized) 8620 can be further surface hardened by nitriding, but it does not respond well to flame or induction hardening because of its relatively low carbon content.

Conclusion

AISI 8620 (SAE 8620) is a low-alloy nickel chromium molybdenum case hardening steel that has high surface hardness, good wear resistance, and a tough, strong core. Being stronger in core than related grades such as 8615 and 8617, it is common in heavy-duty automotive and industrial castings. Upon carburizing and heat treatment, 8620 provides a hard, wear-resistant case and core ductile and tough, which is best suited to gears, shafts, crankshafts, and fasteners requiring durability and reliability.
