Grade Brief

AISI D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium alloy tool steel renowned for its exceptional wear resistance and abrasion resistance, achieved through the large volume of carbides in its microstructure. It is particularly suited for long production runs in cold work applications where both high wear resistance and high compressive strength are required.

Key Features

  • High wear and abrasion resistance.
  • Good dimensional stability during heat treatment.
  • Moderate corrosion resistance in hardened and polished condition.
  • Widely used in blanking dies, forming dies, punches, and cutting tools.

Conclusion

AISI D2 tool steel is a high-carbon and high-chromium cold work steel that produces excellent wear management, dimensional stability, and compressive strength. Because it has a high carbide composition, it is particularly applicable with long production tooling, wherein durability and precision are paramount. Though comparable in toughness to lower-alloy steels, its capacity to remain hard and resist abrasion makes it one of the most popular tool steels in blanking dies, forming dies, punches, cutting tools, and industrial knives.
