Grade Brief

 AISI M2 is a molybdenum-based high-speed steel belonging to the tungsten–molybdenum (W–Mo) series. It is the most widely used high-speed steel, offering an excellent balance of toughness, wear resistance, and red hardness. M2 has largely replaced T1 high-speed steel in many applications due to its superior performance and cost-effectiveness.

Heat Treatment & Processes

Annealing:

  • Heat uniformly to 850–900°C.
  • Hold for 1–2 hours.
  • Furnace cool slowly at a rate not exceeding 20°C per hour down to 600°C, then air cool.
  • Hardness after annealing: ~ 229 HB.

Hardening (Austenitizing):

  • Preheat in two steps: 450–500°C, then 850–900°C.
  • Final heat to 1200–1250°C (austenitizing temperature).
  • Hold until uniformly heated.
  • Quench in oil, salt bath, or forced air.

Tempering:

  • Immediately temper after quenching.
  • Typical tempering temperature: 540–560°C.
  • Double or triple tempering recommended.
  • Final hardness: 62–65 HRC.

Application

Cutting tools: twist drills, end mills, taps, saws, reamers, milling cutters, knives, Cold work tools: punches, dies, and shear blades, Cutting applications involving high speed and light cuts.
