Steel Properties
P20 / DIN 2311 /AISI P20 is the Pre Hardened Plastic mould steel hardness distributed evenly in large cross sections that have excellent weldability with least hardness elevation, good mirror polishability and less streak texture making finishing easier. Size Section availability upto 255mm thickness. Supply hardness is 240-280 BHN.

Heat Treatment & Processes
Heat Treatment
- As supplied: Pre-hardened, quenched & tempered (ready for machining & use).
- If re-hardened:
- Austenitizing: ~840–870 °C
- Quenching: Oil or polymer bath
- Tempering: 550–650 °C (to required hardness ~32–36 HRC)
Machinability & Polishing
- Excellent machinability in the pre-hardened state
- Good for high-quality surface finish (mirror polish)
- Suitable for engraving and EDM texturing
Weldability
- Fair, not recommended for frequent welding
- Requires:
- Preheating to ~250–300 °C
- Post-weld tempering at 550–650 °C
- Use a compatible filler material

Application
Plastic injection molds (large sections), Automotive mold components (bumpers, dashboards, housings), Home appliance mold bases, Die casting dies for zinc & related alloys, High-grade mold bases requiring polish/mirror finish
Conclusion
Grade 1.2738 (AISI P20+Ni) plastic mold steel. This is a premium, pre-hardened tool steel type developed to handle the large and complicated molding applications. It is a favorite material in injection molds, die casting dies, and excellent machinability in the automotive, appliance, and industrial industries because of its combination of strength, toughness, wear resistance, and excellent machinability. Having a great polishability and compatibility with EDM and texturing processes, 1.2738 offers better surface finishing as well as service life, so it is one of the most dependable steels in modern mold-making.
