Grade Brief
AISI T1 (also known as 1.3355 or HS18-0-1) is the original tungsten-based high-speed tool steel. It offers a balanced combination of hardness, toughness, wear resistance, and hot hardness. Although tungsten steels are less common today due to cost and supply, T1 remains widely used for general-purpose high-speed cutting tools.
- Type: Tungsten high-speed tool steel
- Hardness (after heat treatment): 62–66 HRC
- Characteristics: High hardness, wear resistance, red hardness, good toughness
Applications: Turning tools, planing & slotting tools, taps, twist drills, threading dies, broaches, reamers, and profile cutting tools

Heat Treatment & Processes
Annealing
Heat to: 850 – 900 °C
Cooling: Hold, then slow cool at ≤ 10 °C/h to 600 °C, then air cool
Hardness after annealing: ≤ 229 HB
Hardening (Quenching)
Preheat: 450 – 500 °C, then 850 – 900 °C
Austenitize: 1280 – 1300 °C
Quench: Oil, salt bath, or air
Tempering
Immediately after quenching
Temper at: 540 – 560 °C (usually 2–3 times)
Final Hardness: 62 – 66 HRC
Application
Twist drills, reamers, taps, Milling cutters, broaches, Turning, slotting, and planing tools, Threading dies and profile cutting tools, General-purpose cutting operations
Conclusion
AISI / ASTM T1 (1.3355 / HS18-0-1) is a traditional high-speed tool steel containing tungsten with high hardness, wear resistance, and red hardness up to 600 °C. T1 has superior toughness and durability, and is still a useful tool in twist drills, taps, reamers, milling cutters, broaches, threading dies, and other general-purpose cutting tools. T1 is still in use in machining operations and other applications and is popular in spite of newer models such as M2 due to its reliable performance and reliability in machining.
