Grade Brief

AISI D3 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work tool steel with approximately 12% chromium content. It exhibits:

  • Very high wear resistance (abrasive & adhesive) due to a high volume of carbides.
  • Medium toughness and good dimensional stability during heat treatment.
  • High compressive strength, but not secondary hardenable.
  • Oil-quenching is standard, though small sections may be gas quenched in vacuum furnaces.

D3 is more wear-resistant than D2 but also somewhat more brittle, making it suitable for tools requiring high abrasion resistance but lower toughness.

Heat Treatment & Processes

Annealing

Heat to 800–850°C, slow cool at max. 20°C/hr to 600°C, then air cool. Hardness after annealing: ~230 HB.

Hardening

Preheat at 600–700°C. Austenitize at 950–980°C. Quench in oil (small sections may be gas quenched in vacuum).

Tempering

Temper immediately after hardening. Typical tempering range: 150–350°C. Final hardness: 58–64 HRC.

Application

Shear blades & slitter knives, Punches & dies for blanking and forming, Thread rolling dies, Cold extrusion dies, Drawing & deep drawing tools, Metal forming rolls, Stamping tools for long production runs

Conclusion

AISI D3 tool steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work steel used in applications where very high wear-resistance and high hardness are essential. In its combination of relative abrasion resistance with lower toughness, D3 has a higher chromium content of approximately 12 percent and higher carbide content relative to D2. It offers good heat treatment and dimensional stability, and offers good compressive strength, which makes it superior in shear blades, punches, dies, extrusion tools, and stamping processes, which require a long service life.
