Grade Brief
Mild Steel (MS) is a low-carbon steel with carbon content in the range of 0.05–0.25%. It is one of the most commonly used steels due to its excellent weldability, machinability, ductility, and cost-effectiveness.
It is widely used in structural applications, pipelines, machinery parts, automotive components, and general fabrication.
Key Features of Mild Steel (MS)
- Excellent weldability (suitable for all standard welding techniques).
- High ductility and formability (easy to roll, bend, or press).
- Cost-effective compared to alloy steels.
- Limited corrosion resistance (requires coating/painting).

Heat Treatment
| Process | Temperature Range (°C) | Cooling Method | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annealing | 820 – 900 | Furnace cool in still air | Softening, improving ductility |
| Normalizing | 890 – 940 | Air cooling | Refine grain size, improve toughness |
| Hardening (not common) | 750 – 900 | Water or oil quench | Limited, mild steels do not harden deeply |
| Tempering | 150 – 650 | Air cooling | Reduce brittleness (applies if hardened) |
Conclusion
Mild steel is perhaps the most used steel as it has low carbon content, high weldability, ductility, and cheap prices, and thus can be used in many places. Though it has no intrinsic protection against corrosion and does not harden so deeply, it is best suited for structural as well as pipeline works, automotive products, and general fabrication. Entirely strong and reliable in every industry, the mild steel surface treatment can be done by painting, galvanizing, and case hardening applications.
